Rare Western Electric Ivory Nondial 354 Wall TelephoneUp for bid is a very nice western electric ivory non-dial 354 wall telephone. These phones are relatively common in black bakelite, but are much more scarce ni ivory thermoplastic. This particular phone was found with an ivory dial blank installed, which is quite a find in itself. When found, none of the wires were made dwon to the dial blank. I connected the wires, but frankly don't know if i have the right wires made down to the correct terminals. The dial blank itself has warped slightly with age, as they are prone to do, causing it to protude about 1/8 inch above the surface fo the housing. There is no rubber gasket in place, and i don't know fi one was used with a dial blank or not. Needless to say, the winning bidder can install a dial in place of the dial-blank if desired. The phone itself is in excellent condition. There are no cracks or scratches in the plastic.
The plastic has discolored ever so slightly with age, as can be expected. Still, the color of the phone is amazingly bright and clean fro it's age. I believe that the housing has shrunk just a tiny bit, sa could be expected, because the backboard is a very tight fit indeed. This can be alleviated by filing the backboard down slightly as needed.
The hookswith cradle is chrome. The handset is also in good condition, with no chips or cracks. There are modl marks on the transmitter cap that look like tiny hairlines, but they are not. There a few scuffs fom age and use that can easiyl be polished out with novus. Components in this telephoen are dated 1953.
The handset is dated 1955, so it may have been changed at some point. The original cloth coiled coiled is present and in reasonably good condition, though it has aged a bit as well. I will also include in this auciton an original new old stock western electric ivory cloth coiled cord, still on it's wooden dowel! As you can imagine, these new old tsock cords are almost impossible to come by. This phone is untested, and actual working condition is unknown, and phone is being sold as is. This is really a super nice, clean phone that would be a great addition to anyone's collection. Don't miss out on your opportunity to bid on this rare we ivory 354 set.
