Near Mint Working Deforest D10 Radio 1923Here's a museum-quality 1923 deforest d-10 reflex radiophone, among the most collectable (and most iconic) radios of the wireless age. Wonderfully enough, it still works. Better yet, it's complete, it's correct, and it's 100% original. As you can see in the photographs, the condition of this battery set is superb. The panel is flawless and retains its original lettering (the best original lettering i've ever seen on a d-10 panel or d-7 panel). The knobs and dials are close to perfect. No chips, no cracks, no scarred bakelite. The unique, cam-driven deforest crystal detector is original, as are the cat's whisker and crystal. The cam still works smoothly and the detector arm stays put once the cat's whisker is moved into position. The filament switch is original, and it still works. Both original de forest rheostats turn smoothly, work properly and are free of rust or corrosion. Likewise, both condensers turn smoothly and hold their position once a station is tuned. All five rf coils are included with the radio. They are original to this set, and their condition, like that of the radio itself, is second to none. Nearly perfect decals on all five cylindrical transformers, no bent or broken legs, and they all work properly when installed according to the tuning diagram beneath the lid.
The loop antenna is the original deforest loop antenna that came with this radio. It shows some wear on the cloth wire-covering, but the wire itself is still in excelletn condition, as are the poles. The deforest decal on the interior of the centerpiece is about 70%. Worn, but still legible. The loop works, of course. In fact, this is one of only two antique deforest loop radios i've ever owned that can be operated with its loop alone. No outdoor antenna is required. Just hook the radio up to a regulated power supply, install 3 rf transformres and 4 tubes, and you're good to go. The chassis is clean to the extent that ti almost looks like new. No rust on the metal struts, on swollen tube sockets, no corroded (or otherwise damaged) rheostats, no cracked bakelite on the tube deck, no cold solder joints. All four original battery wires (2 red, 2 green) are still intact and run to the lower battery box. All three original deforest af transformers are good (all windings). The radio works in both apm stages. Stage 1 is loud stage 2 is really loud. The radio comes wiht a complete set of dv-3 audions (dry cell type) that were sold with the set when it was new. They are now for dislpay only (filaments are open). Also included are 4 globe 01a tubes with good emissions that are for use with the radio when you wish to power it up. The cabinet is in excellent original condition, wiht its original finish and no alligatoring. There's some finish wear on the top front edge (see pics) and some minor marks from incidental contact with things like cuff links and buttons, but there are no splits anywhere, no loose corner joints, no warped doors, no missing nickel grommets, no missing door pulls, no missing loop escutcheon, no missing feet.Overall it's a gorgeous, furniture quality cabinet whose 85-year-old mahogany finish exhibits a beautiful patina and elegantly complements the radio housed inside. As ntoed above, the radio still works. You'll ened a regulated dc power supply (i'd recommend an arbe iii) and some basic knowledge of how to operate a ca. 1920's battery radio, but even if you're new to early wireless sets, it shouldn't take too long to figure this radio out. An outdoor antenna will aid in picking up distant stations, but even fi you're using the loop alone, you should be able to operate the radio successfully. I'll include a reproduction of the original d-10 owner's manual so you can read the same instructions the original purchaser of this set read when it was new. That's about it. I've eben shipping antique radios and phonographs for years, and i can assure you this radio will arrive on your doorstep in the same condition that it leaves mine. Buyer pays shipping, and insurance is required. Please note i will gladly ship to many overseas destinations, but when shipping overseas, i will ship only via usps express mail. It's faster, it's safer, and it provides na online tracking facility, which paypal requires. No priority mail service overseas. |
